Sweet and a savory grilled cheese with crisp fall apples and sweet caramelized onions makes the perfect fall recipe!
Get cozy up as we make this delicious fall grilled cheese. Best part about fall is all the warm and crisp ingredients put together to make a fall meal.
Who else loves fall flavors? I feel like this is the best fall recipe ever to combine! From fresh crisp apples to Gouda and white cheddar cheese to the sweet caramelized onions . Toasted on thyme butter for that perfect crisp crunch.
Let’s make it!
With a few ingredients for the perfect fall grilled cheese! You’ll need:
Sour dough bread - this is honestly my favorite type of bread to work with when making grilled cheese.
White cheddar and Gouda cheese - both flavors work so well and pairs well with the apples.
Onions- for that sweet caramelized onions I used yellow onion!
Apples- my favorite apples I used for this recipe are Jonathan apples.
For the thyme butter
So simple to make
Butter- salted butter or unsalted butter works
Thyme- fresh or dried works too!
Let’s Grill Fall!
Slice up your sourdough bread
For the sweet caramelized onions you want to dice the onions into small pieces.
On a skillet over medium to low heat add 2 tbsp of oil.
Add the diced onions and allow the onions to cook until translucent. After onions are translucent in color allow to cook for another 10 minutes on low to brown. The trick is to leave them alone until they brown!
As your onions are caramelizing, grate both Gouda and white cheddar cheese and set aside.
Thinly slice your apples and set aside.
Once onions have caramelized add to a bowl and set aside.
To make the thyme butter, mix room temperature butter and chopped thyme. Mix together until combined.
Let’s assemble!
On one side of the bread add both gratedcheese.
Lay the sliced apples on top of the cheese.
On the other slice of the bread spread the caramelized onions.
Fold sandwich and on a skillet over medium to low heat, add one the thyme butter.
Toast grilled cheese on both sides until golden and crisp! Enjoy!
